Previously, I posted a poem I’d made for the Tower series. At the time, that poem was meant to come at the very beginning of the story, setting the reader up, in a roundabout way, for not just the contents of Kitten’s story, but the series as a whole. But I was wrong. That poem still has value for the series, but it better represents Roman’s story than Kitten’s. As I started the rewrite for her story, I thought I’d write a different poem that related to her story more closely. I failed. It was fine at the time, but by the time the second rewrite had started, the story was once again so different that this poem no longer related. Maybe I should save writing another poem for until after I’ve got a draft that I’m just editing, instead of rewriting…
But the poem itself is a good one. I had a lot of fun experimenting with a new rhythm, it contains a heart that contrasts God’s ways with man’s, and it hints at a great story that I may write one day in a different form. So, I thought I’d share, and let you enjoy one valuable biproduct of my less than efficient writing process.
Relent!
A little waif ran fleetly, meekly,
Across the stones slimy, grimy
Sneaking savant, so grim, so gaunt
Queen of her streets, yet always in want
Under her soul’s weeping, seeking
Blades be gleaming, flashing, slashing,
Scheme be breeding, hotly, costly,
How many souls, how many souls,
Guilt over flows, but no one knows,
Gold is not found in tricks and sticks.
The price has been paid, dead and done,
Life has been found, fought and won,
Still no one grasps, still no one seeks
Ignore the help, ignore the need,
Be free and surely another will bleed.
Is this wisdom, winsome, wholesome?
Do eyes not see, perceive, believe?
Let God amend, let knees be bent,
Where truth is mighty, love is not spent,
War has its end unending, ascending
How long will you defend, unbent
How long will you pretend?
Relent!
Thanks for reading, and may your relationship with God and man be less martial and more educational.
With grins,
